Powerset is set to change the way we consume web content using some deep natural language processing. A San Francisco based company Powerset recently launched a Wikipedia Search engine that is an example of changing the way we search on web.
Powerset uses complex natural language processing algorithms to extract meanings of sentences. It also extracts important facts and relations between data.
With curretly indexed 2.5 million Wikipedia pages alongwith inputs from meta search Freebase, Powerset claims to understand user queries in a much better way than normal search engines by creating a semantic layer on top of wikipedia content.
For example , a Powerset search on “when did hurricane hit US” returns amazing results as compared to similar search on Google or Yahoo.

In a recent release, Powerset has said that it plans to index 20 billion web documents to extend semantic search for whole web which would of course, be a costly effort.

Thanks for the post and great hurricane example. Note that we even highlight the dates, because we know that they instantiate the “when”. Cool stuff, huh?
