Here’s a good news for all of you who use gmail to store sensitive data, important communications that need not be read by any third party.
Gmail now offers you the option to use Secured HTTP(https) protocol throughout your Gmail session, which won’t allow any third party to read your data over an unencrypted connection.
Earlier, Gmail used https only when you signed in to Gmail, after signing in, http protocol was used, meaning data traveled in unencrypted form which can be easily read over unsecured connections like public Wifi.
But now you can rest assured that your Gmail account is secured by choosing to always use https. To do this go to Settings and look for Browser Connection and choose Always use https.

You may skip to use https if you don’t have any sensitive information in your Gmail account or if you are not on a public unsecured connection.
Using https slows down Gmail a bit as encrypted data needs to be decrypted by the CPU before displaying. This feature is being rolled out to all users in successive manner, so don’t worry if it’s not available yet.
