What you do when you have to search the web using Google search engine ? Very obvious!! If you are a Firefox 3 user you’ll type the query in the search box provided next to the location bar. But what you do when you want to see the results from Wikipedia ?? Again very obvious, you click the search box logo and select Wikipedia from the pull-down list of search engines and then type your query into the search box and hit enter. Very simple but quite time consuming !! Ain’t that?? If you feel so then I bet, this article will be very beneficial for you.

One of the most useful features that Firefox 3 provides is using its awsome bar( location bar ) as a search box. It is really easy to make Firefox provide you this functionality. Follow these steps to use location bar as a search box.

1. Click on the search box logo so that pull-down list of search engines appear.

2. Click on Manage Search Engines…

Search Box

3. In the mini window that appears select the Google entry and then click on Edit Keyword… button.

4. Enter any keyword that you like and is easy to type. ( I entered “ge” ).

5. Click OK to return back to the mini window and click OK on mini window too.

6. Now go to location bar or type Ctrl+L ( keyboard shortcut to select location bar ) and type the keyword you entered for Google entry. Put a space and then your search term. Hit enter ! I am writing a search query according to my Google keyword:

ge[space]technotraits[enter]

7. Now what you see in the browser window are the results from Google search engine.

Now repeat these steps for all other search engine entries with different keywords. After that, to search with Wikipedia ( considering you entered “wi” as the keyword for Wikipedia )

wi[space]your search term[enter]

Now you’ll see results from Wikipedia. Very handy and easy .. Enjoy !!
