Spam Trends for Q2 2008

Secure Computing, a company providing enterprise security solutions has published a report on Internet threats for the second quarter of 2008. According to the report, USA tops the list of spam sending countries accounting for 16.5% of the spam while Russia is second on list with around 8% contribution.

These top 10 countries account for 55% of global spam. Besides US and Russia, India, Korea, Argentina, Germany were also on the top spam sender’s list.

According to the report, Male enhancement, product replica and prescription drug spam hold the top three places of types of spam.

Swizzor, a rapidly growing ad/spyware family, makes up more than 30 percent of all new malware in Q2 of 2008. The ZBot spyware family is another such ad/spyware family that has grown significantly this quarter. It steals users’ sensitive data while establishing a backdoor on infected computers to give the attackers full control over compromised systems.
