Reasons why Google Chrome may result into a flop show

Google ChromeGoogle-Chrome: A Flop Show?

Well its time for some testing the latest trendy Chrome. It has been a mixed experience while testing Chrome since its release day. Though some users( i’m also one of them ;) ) will always go with the fact that a Google product is always awesome, still there are some holes in the this big ship named chrome that could eventually result into a flop show.Google’s chrome is good but it is not the best if we compare it to Mozilla’s firefox.

The only feature in chrome which is a clear winner over firefox is the speed issue. That also is unfair comparison because chrome at the moment is just like a beautifull sleek bullet that is small and really fast as there are no addons to customize the browsing experience, whereas firefox is like a loaded bomb that fullfills almost your every need. Lets discuss some ‘not so good ‘ features of chrome and see how firefox has an edge over it.

The right click doesn’t work in the history window.

At situations when we need to open up a history item in new tab or window by right clicking the history item, we notice that this facility is not there in Chrome. At times when we need to access multiple history items, we need to hit the back button repeatedly in order to go back to history window.

Dynamic search result fetching is not there in :

Unlike FireFox where search results are shown as soon as we start typing in search box of history window, Chrome lacks this feature. In order to look whether an item is present in the history list, we need to fully type our query and hit enter to see the results.

No add-on support

Currently Google Chrome is without any add-ons. This is one of the reasons why Chrome eats up so less memory. But how a browser could survive without the add-on support in near future where users’ expectations from a browser are ever increasing.

No warning message on closing a window with multiple tabs open.

This feature (available in FireFox) is of great help when we mistakenly close a window with multiple tabs open. Alas Chrome lacks this feature. Though the “Recently Closed Tabs” feature is there in Chrome but opening every single page again by individually clicking each entry in “Recently Closed Tabs” can be painful.

Accessing the extreme portions of a web page with the help of pushed down scroll button is not available in Chrome.

In FireFox (on a lengthy blog) whenever I need to avoid rotating the scroll button to navigate to extreme depth of a web page, I press down the scroll button a bit and move the mouse freely to scroll down fast. This functionality is absent in Chrome, thus making accessibility of the extremity of web pages restricted to painful scrolling of scroll button.

Super clean contextual menus : advantage or disadvantage??

Right clicking any link opens up a limited number of contextual options which are very annoying for the geeks. I wish Chrome had as many options as Firefox in concern of right click, it would have been better experience using chrome.

Uneasy tabbing interface when a large number of tabs are opened in chrome

When you open a large number of tabs in chrome, it becomes almost impossible for you to recognize tabs as shown in the screenshot below, whereas in firefox it doesnt happen, it allows to stack rows of tabs and even different colors for each tab for easy recognition which you can get with various addons provided by firefox.

Security Loophole in chrome (Carpet bomb)

The WebKit engine used inside Chrome leaves it vulnerable to the infamous Safari carpetbombing flaw, security researcher Aviv Raff warns. Windows users of the beta software might be tricked into downloading malicious files onto their desktop as explained by Aviv Raff.

Mozilla has a dedicated fanbase and a huge ever-growing community of developers who build excellent tools for customizing your web experience. If you want to change anything in firefox, there is a very high possibility that you get an add-on for the purpose, and if it is not there you can write it and distribute it. Chrome is starting out with nothing except speed and thus a user experience that isn’t customizable.

Where’s the ful screen mode??

Google should have powered Chrome with full screen mode feature as present in Firefox. An added space at the top of the browser window makes browsing experience great. But sorry in case of Chrome :( .

No Mac/Linux version !!

Yet another annoying thing for increasing Mac/Linux users, Chrome is not available for ‘em. Seems like Google forgot about the large userbase of Mac/Linux while developing Chrome. Google may roll out Chrome for Mac/Linux later but a beta testing with Mac/Linux would have been better.

That’s all well and good, and I agree with your synopsis, but isn’t the whole point of a Beta just that – a testing of the water, a way of opening up all these ‘faults’ before the final release? Is it not possible that Chrome will have add-ons in the future, and right clickable history items? I sure hope so, my feelings are that this is a good browser – and its ‘horses for courses’ – I find no disadvantage, quite the contrary, in having Chrome, Opera and Chrome open all at the same time.

The points above u have mentioned don’t depthify the whole saga of chrome as many of the features which r overwhelming over the firefox remains unpinched.

History: click on the + mark
Search result:the address bar is search/address bar. just type the word it will offer alternatives
ADD on: to be developed by the community.will happen soon. For now visit http://blogote.com/2008/resources/google-chrome-with-firefox-addon.html
No warning for closing window: Here each tab is independent you can drag a tab and prioritise.
Other features to be developed by the community and I am sure Google community will be in within a short time. I donot think this will be flop show.

I totally agreee with the author. If Google had to launch chrome beta, they should have atleast provided the above listed features.
