Keeping your Windows system up to date with latest security patches and updates makes it less prone to threats. Though users with fast Internet access can easily update their windows system online but what if you don’t have Internet access or on a slow connection, windows update would take ages to complete.
Also, in case you need to re-install Windows, you’ll have to update your system again from start as Windows Update doesn’t give you an option to save updates for later use. Surely, it’ll become quite annoying? Isn’t It.
But here’s a workaround to download windows updates for later use for both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Save Windows XP Updates
1. Go to Start Menu > All Programs > Windows Update. After the page loads, click on Custom and your computer will then be checked for updates. It might require installing an ActiveX Control.
2. Once it completes checking for updates, the updates required for your computer will be shown. Note down the update numbers of required updates as shown.
3. Now go to Microsoft Update Catalog website using Internet Explorer(important) and search for the updates using the updates numbers you noted earlier.
4. Now in the search results, look for updates relevant to your system and click on Add to add it to download basket. Similarly, search for other updates and add them to download basket.
5. After you’ve added all the updates to basket, click on view basket and then on Download. A popup will open up asking you to select location to save the updates. Select a location and click on Download and your updates will start downloading to the specified folder.
That’s it your updates are now available for later use. You can give to your friend or slipstream the updates to Windows XP installation disc so that whenever you re-install Windows XP, updates are also installed with it.
Save Windows Vista Updates
For Windows Vista, open Windows Update from Start Menu > All Programs > Windows Update. Now click on Check for Updates to find available updates. Once windows finds updates it’ll prompt you to install them, don’t install them and click on View Available Updates.
Now note down the update numbers of available updates and perform above steps 3-5 to download and save them to your computer.
Conclusion
Downloading and Saving Windows Updates makes updating Windows systems with no or slower Internet connections easier and saves you from hassle of again updating your Windows system in case you had to re-install Windows.
