At this year’s RSA conference, Anti virus maker F-Secure’s security expert Mikko Hypponen has recommended users to not use Adobe Reader as their PDF reader because it is one of the most vulnerable software that has been the primary target of exploiters.
Over last year, 47 percent of targeted exploit attacks have been on Adobe Reader as compared to 28.6% last year leaving behing Microsoft Word which accounted for 34 percent targeted attacks last year.
Targeted attacks are usually done on top level executives, defence contractors or people who have access to sensitive corporate or government information. Attacker usually sends a file with malicious code embedded in it which when opened infects the computer and lets the hacker steal sensitive data.
Though Adobe issues security patches for Adobe Reader but users seldom update it and this has been the main reason of Adobe Reader becoming favourite target for hackers.
It is recommended that you should start using another PDF reader like Foxit PDF reader which is a lightweight and easy to use PDF reader or you can upload your PDF to Google Docs and view them online in your browser.
