Though Windows 7 will have a starter edition, that is targeted towards netbooks as it’ll be a reduced version of Windows 7 with lesser functionality and a limit of running 3 programs at the maximum. this 3 program limit made Linux guys happy as users would certainly not like netbooks that can only run 3 programs at the max, and thus netbook manufacturers would have to switch to Linux distributions.
But today, Microsoft said that Windows XP will still be available even after the release of Windows 7. The netbook OEM’s will have access to Windows XP licenses till October 2010.
This move of Microsoft is targeted at Netbook users who might be reluctant to upgrade to Windows 7 or move to Linux as they are far more familiar with Windows XP.
