Mozilla has become the first browser company to reccomend its users to check for updates to the adobe flash player. It has been found that 80 percent of the users operate on the vulnerable versions of the adobe flash player.

When you land on the Mozilla’s what’s new page you will be asked to update the plug-in version of the flash if you are using the outdated one. As Mozilla says, you can have stability and security issues by using the previous versions of the plug-in.

Although Flash player is supposed to check for the latest versions automatically but plenty of users disable the update process leading to vulnerabilities.

1. FEBE(Firfox Environment Backup Extension)

Febe is an extension for firefox that helps you back up the Firefox profile in a very easy way. It goes beyond backing up your profile and it saves all your extensions as installable .xpi files. Febe backs up your extensions, bookmarks, passwords, history and everything that firefox offers.

The main features of this extension are:

Schedule your back-up on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Backup reminder that alerts you if the backup is not done within specified number of days.

Verify your extension directory. Upgrading Firefox versions sometimes leaves garbage in the extensions directory. Febe can clean it up.

You can quickly backup as many or as few individual extensions/themes as you like

Download Febe

2. MozBackup

Mozbackup is a free utility that will automatically backup firefox profile. It can also back up your Mozilla thunderbird profiles. The process of backing up is very simple as the wizard guides you through various steps you need to perform. Download Mozbackup here

3.Do Backup manually

While there are tools to backup firefox profiles like the ones above, but there’s another geeky way around – Manual backup of the profiles folder that contains all of your firefox extensions, history and saved bookmarks. The main problem is to locate the folder. You can find the profile folder here:

For Vista :

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Profile name>\

For Xp:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Profile name>\

For Debian based Linux distros(e.g. Ubuntu):
.mozilla/firefox in your home directory

Just copy this folder to some other location and in case you have lost your firefox profile due to system crash, upgrading to new version of firefox or some other reason then you can restore it by copying the same folder back to the Firefox Profiles folder. An advantage of manual backup is that you don’t need to have Firefox functioning in order to restore your backup.

It works in the background while you are surfing. Whenever you are browsing any e-shopping website it notifies you if the items you are looking for are available at cheaper prices on other sites in its network.

The sites monitored by the Invisible Hand include Amazon, Borders, Buy.com, Best Buy, NewEgg, as well as many others. It promises not to collect any information other than the items you are looking for.

It is possible that you can find a better deal for a product over what Invisible hand recommends but it is quite unlikely. Overall, it is a great tool for finding the best deals on the online purchases and it can save you a lot of money.

Keeping yourself safe while browsing the internet is extremely important as with increasing number of phishing or other types of attacks, internet has become unsafe for average users. Here are 5 Firefox extensions that’ll help you keep safe while browsing the web.

1. No Script

NoScript is one of the best security add-on you can get in a Firefox browser. NoScript is the winner of “PC World 2006 World Class Award”. It blocks all the javascripts, java , flash, silverlight and other executable content by default. You can enable the scripts for the sites you trust. You can also temporarily allow scripts for a site while randomly surfing or you can permanently allow the scripts for the sites you visit quite often.

2.Web of Trust

WOT or Web of trust protects your computer against the online threats as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in an unfamiliar territory. When you surf to a site, Web of Trust displays a colored icon giving you its rating. WOT reputation ratings has four components : Trustworthiness, Vendor reliability, Privacy and Child Safety. If you are about to enter a risky website, WOT will warn you and save your computer before you interact with a harmful site

3. Location Bar

Location bar highlights the domain of the opened URL just like Internet Explorer 7+ so that you know what domain you currently on, this helps prevent spoofing or phishing attacks. Another useful feature of it is that it converts parts of the URL followed by / into hyperlinks, just hold down Ctrl or Alt key and hover over the URL segments as shown in picture above.

4 .Better Privacy

This add-on will remove the long term tracking cookies used by many websites like Google, YouTube, eBay etc and keeps your privacy by not letting those websites track your long term usage history.

5. FoxyProxy

With FoxyProxy you can use multiple proxy servers simultaneously without having to manually change the connection settings in Firefox options panel. Just define the rules as to which proxy to use for particular URL and it’ll automatically switch the proxy servers for you keeping your browsing safe and private.

You may think you are secure in Web2.0 but there are websites that are able to retrieve your browsing history through some simple scripts. WebCollage2.0 does just that, it will build a collage of icons by sniffing your browser’s history. This application limits itself to displaying only polite sites. In a similar way some other websites may be able to know your browsing habits.

The solution to this security theft is the firefox add-on NoScript. When you install Noscript all the javascripts, java , flash silverlight and other executable content are blocked by default. You can enable the scripts for the sites you trust. You can also temporarily allow scripts for a site while randomly surfing or you can permanently allow the scripts for the sites you visit quite often.

Noscript is essentiall add-on when it comes to dealing with script related security and I recommend you to install this add-on if you visit a lot of interactive web pages daily.

Download NoScript here

You might be aware of Google’s site: operator that lets you restrict the search results to a specific website. Search Site is a Firefox add-on based on Google Search’s site: operator, that lets you search the opened website for selected text on a webpage.

Select some text on a webpage and right click on it and select “Search Site For Selection”.

It also adds a button next to Search button in Firefox’s search box so that you can type a query into Firefox search box and click on the Search site button to restrict searches to currently opened website.

One thing i wished it should have supported is opening search results in a new tab while searching using selected text.

It is an experimental add-on and to install it, you’ll need to tick the check box asking you to install experimental add-on. [via gHacks]

You never know where that shortened URL you clicked on is going to take you, but here’s a nice Firefox add-on known as Long URL Please that will replace every shortened URL on a page with its original URL so that you have an idea where the link is pointing to before you click.

Once you install this add-on, it’ll convert every link which points to a shortened URL to point to original location with its text set to the original location. It supports almost all of the commonly used URL shortening services.

You can control how Long URL Please behaves, like you can set it to change the href attribute of the link without changing the display text or change the display text without changing actual URL the link points to. There are a few other modes available, check out its preferences under Tools > Add-ons.

Also it keeps track of page updates like on Twitter, when you click on more to see more updates, it’ll convert all shortened links to original URLs. Now you know where that shortened URL is taking you!
