Gmail Unveils new feature – Prioritize your Inbox

Gmail has announced a new feature which can come handy to those that receive a huge number of mails on the daily basis. With its new feature, users can prioritize their emails as important, less important or junk. At the top of the inbox there will be two buttons – one for imprtant and other for not so important. The mails you have marked important will be used as a signal by Gmail to mark the future mails as important or not so important.

Gmail also uses other signals such as the emails you reply to often, the people you email to very often and emails you read regularly. With time, the categorization will beome even more smarter and you will only need to read the email that are marked as important by the Gmail. This feature can serve as a great time saver especially for those getting thousands of mails daily. This feature will be available in few days and you will see a “New! Priority Inbox” link at the top right of Gmail.

Gmail developers have modified the looks of the Gmail slightly and have included few changes in the way you manage your contacts. The top left of your Gmail has a list containing three elements – Mail, Contacts and Tasks. By Default, you are in your familiar Mail browsing view.

To view your contacts, click on the Contacts link and you’ll have a list of contacts. In the sidebar at left, you can easily see the most contacted, Friends, Family contacts. You can also easily sort the contacts by First name and Last name by going in the dropdown menu under More Actions.

Besides these changes, few shortcuts have also been added to improve the accessibility like the ‘?’ to view full list of all contacts. You can also write notes about your contacts and add custom labels for Phone no. and other fields.

Blackberry services such as SMS’s, e-mail and Internet browsing are highly encrypted and cannot be easily monitored by the Government security agencies. The Government’s concern is that this technology can be used by the terrorist groups and other anti-national agencies.

Earlier, in January 2008, Government had asked Blackberry to reduce the level of encryption while delivering messages over its network, to let the security agencies monitor the user’s activities. But there has been no reduction in the level of encryption so far.

Two Gulf countries UAE and Saudi Arabia have already announced to shutdown the BlackBerry Service in their countries due to the same concern. India may also follow suit, if there is no action taken by the Blackberry Authorities and the services may be discontinued, which may affect a large number of Blackberry users in India.

Opera has released a newer version of its mobile browser for the Symbian S60 based mobe phones. The new version has been named as the Opera Mobile 10.1 beta. It brings only a few changes and upgrades to the earlier version.

The new version features the most recent version of the Presto rendering engine,Vega graphics library and Carakan JavaScript engine. Another interesting feature in this version is the Geo-location support that can bring you the relevant content and services by knowing your location. The other notable features include improved kinetic scrolling, auto screen rotation and the virtual keyboard.

At World-wide Developer’s Conference, iPhone 4 made an entrance as Apple CEO announced the next generation iPhone loaded with a bunch of new features. The iPhones features a high resolution screen called the retina display with a maximum resolution of 640 x 960 pixels giving a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch.

Apple has renamed the iPhone OS to iOS 4, probably to put iPhone and iPad OS under one category. iPhone uses the micro SIM port like the iPad and uses the same 1 GHz Apple A4 processor. The storage capacities available for iPhone 4 are 16 GB and 32 GB.

The camera has been improved a lot in iPhone 4 which features a 5 MP camera with LED flash. It can record HD video 720 p at 30 fps. It also allows you to edit the movies with the movie editor included in the iPhone 4. It also features a secondary video call camera that they call it Face Time.

The price for iPhone 4 16 GB in US will be 199 USD, while the 32 GB will be priced at 299 USD.

Earlier back in 2008, Gmail gave the option to its users to Always Use Https as the mail travels between the browser and server and it was up to the user to decide if he wants to use Https or not, but now it has made Https default for everyone. Https is used by Banks and Credit Card companies to prevent unauthorized access.

Https increases the level of security by encrypting the information, but makes the mail transfer a little slower. If you are already using Https, then there will be no change but if you don’t want it on for performance reasons, you can turn it off in the Gmail settings.

The use of Https will help those using unencrypted wireless connections and are recommended not to disable this setting.

Google Nexus One is a smart phone from Google based on the Android Open Source OS, was released two days back. Nexus One was expected to be a iPhone killer, but it turns out that it hasn’t been able to beat the later with its features and performance. Nexus one runs on 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor from Quallcomm which is really a powerful processor for mobile devices, but also eats up a lot of battery life.

Nexus one has a lot of goodies from google which include Gmail, Gmaps, GCal, GTalk but it has only 512 MB of application memory, which make it a little disappointing. The phone also doesn’t have the multi-touch interface unlike its peers Palm Pre and iPhone.
